News Letter
Amazing! It seems like only a few months ago we were working on volume 1 # something - and here we are in the fourth year!
The show, as most of you know, was judged to be a good success - several new members, several members renewed, a good auction, GREAT POPCORN (our replacement CORBIN was a dead ringer for the real one - and hardly anyone noticed he was smarter!), the clubÊmade money and everyone seemed to have a good time! The only "down" area was in radios for sale - after the huge turnout of sellers last year, many people decided that their stuff wouldn't be missed this year and left their wares at home - there were so many who decided not to bring any radios for sale that the few who did sold virtually everything in a couple of hours! The auction was very good - several nice radios, thirteen volumes of Riders, several really interesting pieces of test equipment including the oldest B&K item any of us (including the old-timers!) had ever seen. There was also a nice supreme tube tester made in Greenwood MS that sold. Al Land conducted the auction, and did (as usual) and excellent job - Thanks Al! and thanks to all who brought things for the auction. The Hams set up a packet system and demonstrated Ham radio; Randy Corbin ran the AM & FM radio stations all day - the AM transmitter ran without problems thanks to Randy and Farrar's efforts - we sounded pretty good on the air!
Virtually the entire membership showed up sometime during the day, even including our shyest member - Hartley Peavey - who post-poned his business trip to Germany to take in the show. (Hartley shy?? oh you know what I mean!).
Mr. St. George who worked for NBC & ABC New York as an announcer for some 40+ years, came by for several hours and talked about old radio. Mr. Harrison visited for several hours, he is one of the oldest surviving radio / television service men in the area. Both were inducted as members emeritus into the club.
The club's annual business meeting was held at 11:30. The club's membership roll and up to date financials were presented. Since there were no radios entered in the contests, the contests were cancelled - and the fifteen dollar gift certificates were to be returned to Antique Electronics Supply. We still wish to acknowledge Antique Electronics Supply - they provided two fifteen dollar gift certificates for the price of one - a most generous contribution to the club. Perhaps next year people will dust of their radios and get them into the contests! The next order of business was the election of officers. The result is:
President: Randy Guttery
Vice President: Bill Gerk
Secretary / Treasurer: Sherry Guttery
There was no old business. New business included a motion to move the meeting date and time back to the second Sunday at 3PM each month, with a fall-back to the third Sunday should the second Sunday be a holiday. The motion carried unanimously. It was noted that we have one corporate sponsor, the law offices of Minniece, Hamil, Wilson, Mitts & Neville and that we should solicit more. There being no further business, the meeting was closed.
The Corbin popped several pounds of his usual great popcorn - we sure were glad that a last minute schedule change allowed him to make the show! He also brought WTOK's donation to the club - a huge Burle power tube - one of the output tubes from WTOK's transmitter! We would also like to recognize Richardson Electronics for the 4CX20,000 they sent us. That is truly an awesome tube. Someone mentioned to Hartley that he ought to build a power amp using that tube - you know - I think he actually considered it!!!! Seriously, the number and variety of tubes on display was most impressive - thanks to all who put the displays together!
All in all it was quite a show - at one point we had the president/ceo of Peavey Electronics, the retired former president of GC Electronics, a forty-year broadcasting veteran of NBC / ABC network New York and a fifty year veteran of radio / television repair - all talking about the "good 'ole days" - and a bunch of awed spectators taking it all in.
