Where are they now?Update as of 9/6/2010Down to a (shrinking) handful...First - Tenders of the Ghost Fleet... Gilmore, Orion, Proteus all scrapped; Hunley - while still technically afloat - is way-past being a "ship". We have no idea why it's taking so long to scrap her out - we're trying to find out - but considering they started on her before ESCO started on Proteus - and Proteus was completed more than a year ago - we can't help but wonder if there is some "issue"... What ever the reason - she's still (as of February 15, 2010) afloat. Here is a picture from that date: |

| Admittedly, hard to still call her a "ship" - as there are a few "vital" bits missing - but definitely afloat! Thanks to Chris Vallery for this photo! |
Word has it that clearance has now been given to start scrapping Canopus at Teeside... With the "settlement" of the Federal Law Suits over the ships stored at Suisun - those ships are going to be scrapped as fast as possible. I think any chance Sperry (and / or Nereus) had of becoming a donation (museum) ship is now nil. Expect them to be stablized" and moved to scappers ASAP. Unfortunately - Holland is among them - and most likely to suffer the same fate - on the same fast track. USS L. Y. Spear has been towed from Inactive Ships at Portmouth - headed for ESCO Marine for scrapping. We'll report when we received confirmation of her arrival there. Several videos of the move have been posted to YouTube - Search on USS Spear. That leaves two ships at the Naval Inactive ships Facility, Portsmouth... Lake and McKee: So what about Lake and McKee? They are still at Portsmouth, but we now have confirmation the Navy intends to change that and likely sooner than later. In the "Report to Congress on Annual Long-Range Plan for Construction of Naval Vessels for FY 2011" prepared by the Director, Warfare Integration, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations - there is a section which discusses ships to be deactivated and the planned disposition of those ships as well as ships already inactivated and in storage. In that section, the report notes that USS Simon Lake (AS 33) and USS McKee (AS 41) have been declared excess by the Navy - and due to costs, environmental concerns, etc. - the preferred disposal method for both ships is to contract for their dismantling and recycling. While this plan is part of the the Future Years Defense Program (FYDP) which covers (in the short term) the years 2011 - 2020; the report also states "The Navy recognizes that environmental and safety risks increase as inactive ships deteriorate and their disposal is delayed. The longer retired ships sit in the inactive ship inventory, the higher the environmental risks and disposal costs." In view of this - and considering what they just went through in legal problems with the Suisun site - we anticipate the Navy will scrap Lake and McKee ASAP. |

This is the current list of the last known location of all "afloat" Submarine Tenders. This Update: July, 2010 |

MARAD: After years of inaction by the Navy and MARAD; protests and lawsuits by environmentalist, an agreement was reached March 30th, 2010 that will result in the elimination of "The Ghost Fleet" from Suisun Bay. 20 of the worst ships will be cleaned and made ready for recycling by the end of 2012- the rest by 2017. The upshot is that the three remaining sub tenders at Suisun will all be scrapped (or otherwise disposed of) within seven years - if not sooner.
All Tenders held by MARAD at James River recently (USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS 16); USS Orion (AS 18) and USS Hunley (AS-31)) have been scrapped (though Hunley's scrapping is still underway as noted above. |

| In "harm's way": Canopus is already at Teeside to be scrapped. We've requested an "update" on progress, so far not answered. We'll post when we hear. As noted above - we had been told that Hunley's scrapping was completed. Photo evidence shows that not to be the case. L. Y. Spear is under tow to ESCO Marine for scrapping - to commence upon arrival. The five remaining - USS Sperry (AS 12); USS Nereus (AS 17); USS Holland (AS 32); USS Simon Lake (AS 33); and USS McKee (AS 41) all are to be scrapped - contracts to be awarded soon for Lake and McKee (they are ready to move); and contracts for Sperry, Nereus and Holland will be first let to "stabilize and secure" - then to tow and scrap once they can be moved without contaminating as they go. |

It's likely very obvious that I haven't been able to devote as much time to TenderTale as I'd like. I'm not going to make excuses - there are just so many hours in a day - and sometimes we have to do some things - when we'd really much rather doing something else. Several projects remain unfinished - and there still a lot of other clean-up tidy-up things that just go begging. I'd hoped for some help - but so far other than some updates, etc. (for which I am VERY grateful!) - no one has stepped up. So I'll continue to do what I can - when I can.

As Ships Sleep
The photos for this section have been re-scanned and presented at a much larger scale. With the increase in bandwidth available to most people - download times are not the problem they used to be - so - the quality and size of the pictures on TenderTale will all eventually be brought to the same level as these. Also - remember - these are old pictures - MANY ships are being removed very quickly - and information is painfully difficult to get out of anyone involved (the courts may have something to do with that - as part of the recent settlement of several law suits over these ships). Suisun looks very different today - and will likely be even more deserted tomorrow (or the next day). |
If you'd rather remember your ship in her better days - fresh paint - shiny brass - you might want to bypass this section - as they say - sometimes the truth hurts - and unfortunately the truth is - the rest of the world has forgotten these ships - save for a few who scavenge and plunder. The following ain't pretty! If you'd like to skip past to the Reunion Listings - click here-> Go to Reunions If - on the other hand - you recognize that times, people, places - and yes our old ships age and pass on- and you'd still like to see her one last time - at least she's still afloat and not (yet) a Toyota hood or Schlitz beer can... Scroll on down. The Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, Benecia, California is the final holding place for ships taken out of service and held pending final (government wise) disposition. A few ships escape to other uses - but not many -- most ship are sold for recycling (how's that for a polite euphemism for cutting torch) - . In the mean time- here they stay - bleaching in the California sun and riding the gentle tide of the backwaters of the San Francisco Bay whose salt water rusts away at their bottoms. One more chance to bail out -> Goto Reunions Sometime back in some of my ramblings here on TenderTale - I made the "request" that someone with an airplane and a camera close to Suisun and/or Ft. Eustis -- go take some pictures. Well - Chris Lund has done just that. |
NOTICE -- PLEASE READ! THIS IS SERIOUS... Back in August 2001 - Chris just jumped in his plane - and buzzed the reserve fleet at Suisun and clicked away with his camera. It made the people at the reserve a little nervous - but once they found out who / what / why (and that Chris wasn't some nut trying to bomb / steal /who knows what - a ship... everything was cool. Then 9/11. Needless to say - security at these facilities is tighter now-- If you're thinking about taking some aerial photos - fine - BUT DO IT RIGHT!!!! Contact the appropriate authorities and tell them what you'd like to do and get permission. I have contact info here - if you need name / numbers, etc. - email me and I'll send it in a reply. I talked to the nice folks at Suisun just today - and they noted just how different things are now - and buzzing the fleet there will garner you a buzz by some serious folks from Travis - which are seconds (literally) away --- as fighters are STILL aloft patrolling the area. Keep in mind - Langly is equally close to Ft. Eustis - so unless you're ready to pit your puddle hopper against an F15 or better... THINK IT THROUGH - and do it right!!!! Also note - USS Proteus is no longer at Suisun (see above). |

Thanks to Chris Lund - who took my suggestion and overflew the Reserve Fleet at Suisun - and got some great aerial pictures. Without further ado... |

Three of several "groups". Eighth ship from the left is NEREUS (AS-17) second from right is PROTEUS (IX-518 former AS-19). Keep in mind - Proteus is no longer there - she was scrapped Jan/Feb. 2008. |
| Back side of that front row - again eighth from right is NEREUS' stern. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Another group - HOLLAND (AS-32) is first ship on the right. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ship in the middle is SPERRY (AS-12) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Again - Sperry in the middle (sixth from the left - We warned you some of these were tough!) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

PROTEUS. Sorta like a recruit coming out of the barber shop that first day... very little dignity left (and she's completely gone now). |
PROTEUS. It too has that FULTON class bow line - but with all that white... hard to see. |
Another picture of the back of the row NEREUS (sixth from the right) and PROTEUS (second from left) are on-- it was partly cloudy - so Chris was having to take shots around the cloud's shadows... |
| An enlargement of the NEREUS and PROTEUS - pretty grainy - but at least you can see some details here. |
