I served aboard the Proteus from Septmber 1971 until April 1974,coming aboard in Vallejo at Mare Island, awaiting her re-fit. I was an OM and also had the pleasure and honor of serving under Stu Sturgill, as his division office yeoman, while stationed in Guam. After his unfortunate motorcycle accident and subsequent transfer to San Diego Naval Hospital, I was also transferred to San Diego, to the Prairie (AD). I visited Stu at the hospital, and also saw his wife Mary again. It was good to see him still with us after the accident. I was aboard throughout the Ford Island boiler incident, as well as the Sydney, Austrailia visit, and I have many pictures of my tour aboard Proteus, if you are interested. I'm sorry to hear that she has been decommissioned. At any rate, it was good to stumble across your site, and I hope to hear fo any reunions in the future. I was the first female JAG to report PCS for sea duty and I lobbied for PROTEUS, where I served from '81 to '83 under Mike Colley and Steve Perry. As you can tell, I am tremendously proud of having served in her. However, it broke my heart to see the changes made in her and then to read about her tow. I retired from the Navy in '96 and can truthfully say that every duty station was a good one. However, PROTEUS was so great that I extended once and tried to extend again, only to be told to move aside and let another JAG share in some of the fun. At my Hail and Farewell, I told the wardroom that I knew that the day I walked off PROTEUS, I was leaving the best tour I had or would ever have in the Navy - and I was right. I qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer and have many fond memories of standing underway watches on the 0-4 level under the canvas. I was too short to see out the periscope in the pilothouse on the 0-3 level, but it made for some hilarious stories when the CO would pick me up to look through the 'scope. Of course, now someone would complain that that was sexual harassment (yeah, right).Mary Hall CDR, JAGC, USN (Ret.)

What a great tribute to those who supported the Silent Service. I was stationed in USS Dixon (AS-37) from Jan 1979 - Oct 1983. I have a cruise book from the Diego Garcia deployment of 1981, which contains some pictures and info such as the crest, mission, and motto of Dixon. I also noticed information was wanted concerning the ships call sign. I am a Radioman and, it's funny how one doesn't think of these things until a question comes up, but the call sign was NWPB. Right now, I can't remember the call sign of my second ship, but I can remember NWPB was Dixon. Mike Scozzafava RMC(SW) USN

I read with interest your history of the HOLLAND. I served three tours aboard HOLLAND, the first in Rota/Chasn, the second in Rota and the third in Brem/Holy Loch. The history shows HOLLAND leaving Rota in November, 1966, and taking Site 4 in Chasn in the summer of 1967. This is not true. We arrived at Navy Base Chasn on November 22, 1966, for rebuilding the crew and preping for Site 4 duty. We were supposed to do an east coast tour and test the backup site in Melville, Rhode Island. However, this was cancelled and we relieved the HUNLEY on December 22, 1966. The HUNLEY did our tour and anchorage check along with relieving ORION in Norfolk after the allegedly failed an ORSE. I left HOLLAND for CANOPUS (back to Rota) in September 1967. In 1969 when HOLLAND returned to Rota, I crossdecked back to HOLLAND and remained aboard until September 30, 1971, when I went to Dam Neck,VA for shore duty. After the ADCOP program was cancelled I was given choice-of-duty orders. I selected HOLLAND again and picked it up in Bremerton and stayed aboard until December 1976 when I left her in Holy Loch. I transferred to JOHN ADAMS SSBN-620(B) and did refits out of Site 1 until mid-78. Apparently the history was written as if the HOLLAND didn't relieve HUNLEY until after the east coast cruise. I know that's not true. I held every paygrade from E-3 to E-7 on HOLLAND. She was a good ship. If you still don't have data on the missile division aboard the FBM tenders, i'll provide one. Missile division was W-1 division aboard HOLLAND and W-4 division aboard CANOPUS. Sometime in the mid-70s they consolidated the O&R manuals and missile division became W-4 division aboard HOLLAND also. The other number was assigned to the Torpedo division on all occasions. W-2 was Fire Control, W-3 was Special Weapons, and W-5 was Navigation. I also served in W-6 division on HOLLAND in Holy Loch which was Weapons QA and weight testing. I ran the weight test facility on HOLLAND from December 1975 until my transfer in 1976. Hope this helps. Let me know about the missile division job description. Love the site.

USS Holland AS-32

I was stationed on board the USS Holland AS-32 from 1986-1988. I was the loan Sonar Repairman working out of the R-4 Repair department. I have a ships photo signed by Capt. Little and a letter of accomadation from the admiral at site-4 Weapons Base Charleston S.C., along with personal photos of weapons quals by the marines and the ever breath stopping movement of the ship under the Cooper River Bridge leaving Charleston. It was a paradox. The Subs entering the river had to wait for high tide and we had to wait for low tide due to drafts. I found out here recently that all three vessels I served aboard have been decommissioned (USS James Monroe SSBN 622-Blue, USS Holland AS-32, USS Ingersoll DD-990), and mothballed in Washington state, I'd love to go and see them now. It has depressed me terribly. I have very fond memories of friends and events while onboard. Especially the Holland. Capt. Little was a great skipper and he did everything for the benefit of the crew. Our cruises were strictly for R/R and in appreciation of the "Can Do" attitude demonstrated by us. Phillip Easterday
