I reported aboard the Orion right out of boot camp in 1965, I worked in the crews barber shop and also the Officers barber shop. I had some real good times on the Orion and have good memories of her. I try to make as many reunions as my time permits and was in Norfolk when she was decommissioned in 1993. I left the Orion in 1967 when I was transfered to the sub base in Holy Loch Scotland. I would like to hear from any former shipmates.Don Brewer.

I am interested in acquiring a copy of a photo, digital or otherwise. It is a photo of the USS PROTEUS in Tokyo Harbor at the signing of the Japanese surrender. This photo was mounted on the outside of the wardroom (at least it was in 1991-1992). This awesome photo was a standard 8" high, but about 30" wide. 52 (yes, fifty two) submarines were moored alongside (26 each side) to commemorate the 52 subs lost in WWII. I was stationed aboard the Proteus from December of 1977 through her return from her overhaul in Long Beach to Guam in May of 1980, and I have since renewed my interest in her whereabouts. I stumbled upon your site while surfing one day and I just want you to know that your site, while it stirred me to no end, almost brought tears to my eyes. I never would have imagined that a ship once so proud could be brought to such a sad and humble end. I do on the other hand realize that she did continue to serve our great Navy in whatever way the "higher-ups" deemed necessary. It just isn't the way I picture her in my mind, i'll always know the "pro" to be a vital and important part of my life. She meant a great deal to me in the terms of my growing and maturing into a responsible human being. All my fellow shipmates should know that she did serve a proud and valiant tour, right to the last day. I will always feel that her crews, both before me and after me, are my shipmates, now and forever. The feeling of exhiliration that overcomes me when I think about the times that we shared as mates is inexplicable. I'm sure you can relate. I will always look upon her memory with great love and admiration. I am sorry to say that I have not been able to locate or contact any of the "guys" I served with and maybe you might be able to assist me in that endeavour. I was a Storekeeper, learned my trade that I still to this day ply. I would also like you to know that when we returned to Guam in 1980, I and a number of my friends crossdecked to the Hunley for the return trip to Charleston. John E. Wallace

I served on The AS15 USS Bushnell from 1960 to 1963. I was a Navy Draftsman(one of 200 or so.) She was in Key West at the time, we made a couple of jaunts at sea. One to New Orleans and One to Jamaica in the Carib. In 1962 or 1961 the Presedent -- then John F. Kennedy -- was to pay the Naval Base in Key West a vist. I think this was at the beginning of the missle crisis in Cuba. There was no presedential flag on the base or any of the ships in port. The Admiral came to Bushnell and asked if we could help. We had a group of draftsman on board (5) and we set out to create a Presedential flag. The group stayed up all night drawing and painting on cloth to create this flag to fly for the President the next day. Well the next day came and we raised the flag, it rained and the flag of course blurred. To this day I do not think John F. Even saw it. We all got accomadations into our records for this one. I served aboard Canopus from the fall of 1969 to 1971.I was sorry to see [I missed] the CANOPUS reunion this past June -- if I had known I certainly would have attended. I can still remember the great times with my shipmates. I often think about them and where and what they are doing now. I look forward to seeing when the next reunion wiil be held. I served aboard the Proteus from Septmber 1971 until April 1974,coming aboard in Vallejo at Mare Island, awaiting her re-fit. I was an OM and also had the pleasure and honor of serving under Stu Sturgill, as his division office yeoman, while stationed in Guam. After his unfortunate motorcycle accident and subsequent transfer to San Diego Naval Hospital, I was also transferred to San Diego, to the Prairie (AD). I visited Stu at the hospital, and also saw his wife Mary again. It was good to see him still with us after the accident. I was aboard throughout the Ford Island boiler incident, as well as the Sydney, Austrailia visit, and I have many pictures of my tour aboard Proteus, if you are interested. I'm sorry to hear that she has been decommissioned. At any rate, it was good to stumble across your site, and I hope to hear fo any reunions in the future.
