Please note - due to a recent "hacking" incident -
entries between August 2008 and December 2011 were lost.
Unfortunately- every effort to recover the lost entries was unsuccessful
as even the backup files were corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately an off-site
backup of the earlier entries was available and is here. We regret this loss.

Comments:

I served my country during the Iranian Crisis of 1980 on board the Spear. While deployed to the Indian Ocean I met a sailor off the U.S.S. Baton Rouge(SSN689) and we evenually married. Almost 20 years later we are still together and have two fine sons. I would be interested in hearing from any old comrades in arms from those days. My maiden name was Shannon and I was in Engineering.Mary Ellen Nigh (Shannon)

I was a Dam Neck Teck in 74-75. I then served aboard two boats (W. Wilson(Posieden) and S. Houston(Polaris). I trained originaly for Poseiden C school then went to conversion school. I particularly enjoyed the E-6 test story along with the fast attack story. I too had a LPO that gave me a butt chewing and a chalenge. Those six years I spent were both the best and worst years of my life. I don't regret a minute of it. Del Bowlby ex-MT2(ss)

I have spent the evening reading "Tender Tails". I was one of those submariners tied up to the Protius in 1973 and 1974 when I was on the USS James Monroe SSBN622. Thanks for the heart warming, this is no BS, sea stories. I enjoyed them all and it brought back some of my more treasured memories. How about "Andy's Hut?" I remember a few nights I don't remember there.

Dixon

Comments:

After finishing Boot camp, and OM "A" school at the Lakes, I was assigned to the Dixon Pre-com crew in Jan 1971. After our training in San Diego, we were flown to Norfolk to begin getting the ship ready for sea trials. After sea trials, we commissioned her, and made the trip through the canal, with a few stops like San Juan, Balboa, and Acapulco. Needless to say, I learned a lot of things that weren't taught to a farmboy from N.H. on that trip! After reaching San Diego, we went through the tediousness of fleet training, and finally tied up at Ballast Point and began our job of tending Subs. I was assigned to the Optical shop, R-5 Div, where we repaired Sub Periscopes, and optical equipment. I stayed on the Dixon untill May of 1975, and was transferred to the Dixie, AD 14, untill my discharge in June 1976. I had many memorable experiences onboard the Dixon, and during the summer of 1988, I was working on a commercial fishing boat off the coast of Washington, and watched the Dixon sail past. Jon Crosier, OM2

Having served aboard the USS Proteus from 1962-63, and just finished reading the entire Proteus story, my memories have been awoken. What a great job you guys did! I'm curious to know if there is any way to purchase USS Proteus AS-19 hats or other paraphernalia. Jeff Putz, Data Processing Tech 2nd Class.

Canopus

Comments:

I was on the Canopus from 1991-1993, shortly before it was decommissioned. Because I was the CMC's Yeoman, I was aware of much of the history of the ship. Also, I served shortly after the ship had arrived in King's Bay, Georgia. The history that you are missing belongs in Holy Loch, Scotland. The ship was a sister to the USS Simon Lake. We not only replaced the Simon Lake in King's Bay but had replaced her in Holy Loch, as well. The ship came to King's Bay directly from Baltimore in 1990, where it had received a complete refit. Prior to that it had been in Holy Loch since 1984, with the exception of a short stint in Guam. In 1992, the ship received a partial refit in our home port of King's Bay to allow us to service more Boomers, in more than one port. We sailed from King's Bay to Norfolk on and off in 1992 and 1993 trying to replace the 3 Tenders that had already been decommissioned. In 1993 it was announced that we to would decom. The ship was actually decommissioned in King's Bay not in Norfolk. She never left King's Bay under her own power, again. She was towed out of King's Bay in 1994, after decommissioning. I do not know whether or not you have access to USN personnel but a good person for history on the Canopus is ET1(SW) Larry T. Holland. He was the only person I knew who was on the ship in King's Bay, Holy Loch and Guam. I hope this helps to feel in some missing data. I cherish the time I spent on her and was sad to see her go. Thanks for the memories...Chelsea A. Edmonds
