Entries are display most recent first.

Please note - due to a recent "hacking" incident -
entries between August 2008 and December 2011 were lost.
Unfortunately- every effort to recover the lost entries was unsuccessful
as even the backup files were corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately an off-site
backup of the earlier entries was available and is here. We regret this loss.

Robert Kelly's wife

Proteus

Comments:

My husband served on the Proteus from 6/62 to about 12/64. Finding these pages has brought back memories for him and enjoyment for me and our children and grandchildren. He was in Holy Loch and Rota for most of the time and based out of Charlestown. I'm sure he would enjoy hearing from old shipmates, if possible. Our son is also a Navy vet, having served 6 years as an X-ray tech in Philly and later in Maryland. Thanks for a great site! His name, by the way, is Robert Kelly, but he was called "Rabbits" and he was an MR3. Pat Kelly

USS Dixon as 37

Comments:

I was saddened at the thought that she is no longer in service. I remeber the first time that I saw her. Fresh out of DC A school. I was awed by her size and knew I would stay lost forever. She was my home for 2 and a half years - from March 1988 'till August 1990. The first time I left the continental US was safe inside those bulkheads. I saw Hawaii, dolphins, and whales from her. My memories are many and will last the rest of my life. This country girl from Oklahoma learned alot about life and to find my place in life. I had wondered if she was still in service. It is sad to think that no longer will "On the Road Again" play as she gets underway. To all those that I served with I hope for you lifes best and blessing. Louann " Joker" Riddle

Proteus

Comments:

Served on Proteus from Dec 71 thru Sep 73. She was my first assignment from Boot Camp, NTC-RTC, San Diego. I was cook on duty when the stowaway was released in Brisbane. She was escorted through the after mess decks, got a good look and she was not the "Twiggy" type. Her "boyfriend" was one of my mess cooks. The striker who was on watch when the boiler blew, was one of my mess cooks. Reading over the stories brought back some good and not so good memories. I would not trade them. Andy's Hut...oh yeah! The yacht club...good times. The yard period at Mare Island...not so good. But the liberty was great!

Hunley

Comments:

I went aboard the Hunley in November of 1968, right out of "a school", where I was taught to be a patternmaker. I was eventually assigned to the carpenter shop, R-7 div., under Chief Reeves. Looking back on my service I have found my time was well spent and I had the opportunity to meet some knowledgeable, interesting, and wonderful guys. The Hunley was going to Guam, my time was short so in June, I believe, of 1971, I was transferred to the Orion. Once again I was uder Chief Reeves, in the carpenter shop, as he was transferred also. I left the service in December of that same year. I would sure like to hear from anyone from the carpenter shops of either ship, that may have served with me. Chief, where are you and Padlo or Spurgeon, Finnesy, Dulin, Skipper or Clem?
